Hi Kgomotso. Many people do have the same concerns including those who want to move from corporate to public sector. It always feels intimidating, but it's definitely doable. If you have a CIMA qualification, you're already in a strong position; it shows you've got the skills and commercial mindset that corporate employers value.

The key is making your experience easy to understand and relatable to corporate recruiters. I recommend tailoring your resume to use corporate equivalent language for your public sector experience, especially because the initial screening of CVs is done by AI in many corporates. For example, translate fund management to budget management, policy implementation to strategic project execution, and service delivery to customer experience etc. Highlight all your transferable skills like reporting, stakeholder management, governance, risk management, data analysis, and storytelling which are highly relevant in corporate finance, consulting, or regulated industries.

Corporate employers want to see that you can drive efficiency and results. Highlight projects where you cut costs or improved processes, negotiated with vendors, and used financial insights to influence decisions. Also, target industries that are easier to transition into with your background, such as regulated sectors like utilities, healthcare, or financial services, or consulting firms that work with government clients. Finally, connect with other CIMA or CGMA members on LinkedIn or at local events, referrals go a long way!

At the end of the day, you already have the skills; it's just about framing your experience so corporate recruiters can see it.

My name is Patson Kuntambila, currently based in Lilongwe, Malawi. I have solid professional connections across the Southern African regional bloc (SADC), especially in Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. I am presently at a career pivot. I wish to raise for discussion the issue of cross-geographical flexibility in the recognition and advancement of members.

Given the increasingly global nature of professional practice, our competencies, experience, and leadership potential are inherently transferable and should be recognised beyond jurisdictional boundaries. However, there appears to be an element of structural rigidity that, in certain instances, constrains the effective mobility of talent and the sharing of expertise across geographies.

Such rigidity risks limiting the full value that capable members can contribute to the profession and its stakeholders globally. A more flexible, principles-based approach to promotion and recognition would better align with global best practice and enhance the institution's relevance, inclusivity, and impact.

This is indeed a very good space and thank you very much for creating it.

Am Colonel Mboozi Soonga a Zambian Lady, living and working in Lusaka. An Associate CMA/CGMA, since 2017. I have been working in the Zambian Defence Forces for 28 years; hoping to move on soon, once a good opportunity presents itself.

Topics am currently interested in, include ways of becoming a Fellow and understand how CIMA became AICPA-CIMA, and what is likely to happen next; won't we wake-up one day and find we no longer have a qualification??

Submitted for your kind review and guidance were necessary.

    Hello Ibrahim,

I am aged member (64) who is a proud Management Accounting Consultant. My emphasis in consulting is based on the three subjects at strategic level - strategy, risk, finance. My interest and area I want to expand on are: Artificial Intelligence, Data Innovation, Sustainable Business Models in a digital age. I am aware of the polycrisis factors that are changing, the way business models design and risk management are to be looked into. I am also aware of the role of leadership and critical thinking needed, hence I have developed interest in neuroscience and psychology of behavior and thinking.

I want to correspond with members in Management Consulting particularly in areas where the CGMA has an edge, in terms of syllabus and competency frameworks.

I'm Tapewa Mbale , a Chartered Accountant (CA Zambia), currently working in Accounts Payable within a parastatal organisation in Zambia. I'm looking to transition into more strategic finance roles in the near future.

I'm currently preparing for my CIMA Strategic Case Study exams, with the sitting fast approaching.

A topic I'm particularly passionate about right now is Generative AI in Finance - and I'm keen to connect with others exploring how it's reshaping our profession.

Looking forward to engaging, learning, and growing with this community!
