Dear colleagues and comrades, do we really have to host CIMA Engage 2026 in Cape Town with all that is happening in SA? Please share your thoughts

Given the prevailing situation, it's important to give it a rethink and ensure necessary measures adopted to ensure a smooth CIMA Engage 2026

The current situation in South Africa is really disturbing and there is a need for re assessment of whether its safe for the event to be held in South Africa.

    Hi

Not too sure what is meant by what is happening in SA. There are no xenophobic attacks in South Africa. What is being marched against is what is happening globally where there is a migration issue. The protesting SA citizens are concerned about people that do not have the correct documentation to be in SA. This is a matter of legality and not xenophobic.

    Hi LP,

Many thanks for your response. However we have seen very recent video evidence where other African decsents  have been given 30th June to vacate their homes and return back to their home countries regardless whether they are documented or not. This is what we are worried about where even legally documented other African descent's have been given ultimatum to move from SA. I am particularly worried that people may be targeted at airports on arrival and so CIMA can always move the venue to another country and possibly host in 2027 when the situation might have normalize.
    my Thoughts.

We should always look at what is portrayed in the media with a pinch of salt, we have also seen footage of people who have come into SA with visiting VISAs but have stayed for years post expiry and opened businesses without the proper legal papers, impacting economically to the country. There are always two viewpoints to every argument. Although I cannot say whether people would be targeted at airports or not, if people feel uncomfortable then that should be taken into consideration regarding CIMA hosting.

    Hi LPM,

Perfectly agreed. Wrong anywhere is wrong everywhere. However you will also agree with me that some of the indigens have taken advantage to loot and kick out other well meaning Africans with proper documentations and permits. My position is simple, the safety and security of CIMA professionals are very important. CIMA must therefore consider the safety of their members first before anything else. I therefore move a motion for the venue to be changed to a more safer country where professional Accountants will be welcomed without being chased away like animals in their own continent. I so move. And my fellow comrades should respond yeeeeeye🥰

    Dear all

Thank you for the conversation and inputs into this important discussion.

In terms of addressing this through the appropriate channels, may I propose that the matter is taken forward through CIMA Africa. You can reach out to our Head of Strategic Corporate Engagement - Romona Rampersad - and I am sure that she will be able to bring it to the attention of the relevant individuals for further discussion.

    Thank you.

    Kind regards

    Hi

Thank you, Solomon for raising this issue.

cc LPM, I appreciate your perspective, and I agree that illegal immigration is a legitimate concern for every sovereign nation. However, we also cannot ignore the growing evidence that many attacks and acts of intimidation in South Africa have gone beyond undocumented migration and have affected legally documented African nationals as well.

The Government of Ghana would not begin the evacuation and repatriation of close to 300 Ghanaian citizens if there were no genuine safety concerns. Reuters, AP News, and several international media outlets have recently reported on anti-immigrant protests, violence, intimidation, and growing fears among foreign African communities in South Africa. Similar concerns have also been raised by Nigeria and other African countries.

We have also seen reports and public incidents involving foreign nationals being denied or obstructed from accessing certain public services, including healthcare, while groups such as Operation Dudula have openly targeted migrants, both documented and undocumented.

My point is not to condemn all South Africans. Many South Africans themselves have spoken against xenophobia. The issue is that perception, safety, and inclusiveness matter for an international professional gathering like ENGAGE. If a significant number of African members feel unsafe or unwelcome, then CIMA should seriously consider whether another venue may better reflect the spirit of pan-African unity and professional solidarity.
