Communication

This competency is generally more straightforward, but stronger submissions go beyond simply stating that communication took place. A common weakness is describing what was communicated (e.g. sharing results) without explaining how the communication was delivered, adapted, or received.

Strong submissions clearly demonstrate how the candidate tailored their communication to different audiences, especially when conveying technical or financial information. Assessors are looking for structured examples that show both effectiveness and awareness of audience needs.

Key elements expected in a strong submission:

  • Evidence of tailoring communication
Demonstrating how information was adapted depending on the audience (e.g. senior management, non-finance stakeholders, or junior team members)

  • Clarity in delivery method and approach
Explaining whether communication was delivered through reports, presentations, meetings, or discussions—and why that method was appropriate

  • Translation of technical information
Showing how complex financial data (e.g. month-end results, forecasts, KPIs) was simplified to ensure understanding

  • Engagement with stakeholders
Demonstrating two-way communication, including responding to questions, addressing concerns, and ensuring alignment

  • Reflection and impact
Explaining how the communication improved understanding, supported decision-making, or influenced outcomes

Examples of Strong Evidence

  • Tailoring communication to the audience:
A candidate presents month-end results to senior management, focusing on key insights and strategic implications, while providing more detailed breakdowns to the finance team.

  • Effective delivery and interaction:
A candidate leads a meeting or presentation where they clearly explain financial performance, respond to questions, and ensure stakeholders understand the implications.

Demonstration of Communication Behaviour

Candidates should provide evidence of actively demonstrating strong communication through:

  • Adapting messaging based on audience knowledge and needs

  • Presenting or explaining financial information clearly and effectively

  • Selecting appropriate communication methods (e.g. reports, meetings, presentations)

  • Engaging stakeholders and encouraging discussion or feedback

  • Supporting decision-making through clear and meaningful insights

  • Reflecting on how their communication approach improved outcomes

Key Reminder

Candidates should focus on how they communicated and the impact it had, rather than simply stating that communication took place (e.g. “I sent an email” or “I shared results”). The emphasis should be on effectiveness, audience awareness, and influence, not just the medium used.
