PER Supervisors FAQ
Quick guidance on who can sign off practical experience requirements (PER)
Who can sign off my experience?
Your line manager is normally best placed. Your experience should be signed off by someone who has direct knowledge of your work and is in a more senior position than you. They do not need to be a qualified accountant or a CIMA member.
Who cannot sign off my experience?
Relatives cannot sign off experience, and applicants cannot sign off their own experience.
How many Supervisors do I need?
The number depends on your employment history and the roles used to demonstrate three years in a finance or relevant role and the professional achievements. The minimum required is one supervisor.
What happens if one of my managers no longer works for the company?
They can still sign off your experience if they had direct knowledge of your work at that time. They do not need to be employed by the same company as yourself.
What if I report to more than one manager?
You may submit only one supervisor for each section of your employment history. If two or more supervisors need to verify your work experience, break down the experience and allocate one supervisor to each part.
I am self-employed. Who can sign off my experience?
You need someone who can verify your role or company and confirm at least three years of finance experience. Possible verifiers include:
- Longstanding clients
- An external accountant to your company
- Your business bank manager
For professional achievements, a client with sufficient oversight may sign off STAR templates for work completed for them. You may also use examples from a previous role if a former line manager can verify them.
What if I am no longer in contact with my previous managers?
All experience included in your application must be verified by an appropriate supervisor. If you are unable to obtain verification from a previous manager because you are no longer in contact with them, please contact the Membership Admissions Team for guidance and support on the available options.
