As we kickoff Women's History Month, and the 2026 theme “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future”, it is a great time to reflect on the past, the present and the future.

Looking to the past, we honor the women who paved the way—often navigating barriers, redefining leadership, and expanding opportunity in spaces where they were underrepresented. In our profession, progress has been shaped by women who not only excelled technically, but also advocated for equity, mentorship, and stronger organizations. Their courage and persistence built the foundation we stand on today.

In the present, sustainability calls us to think beyond environmental impact alone. It includes financial resilience, ethical governance, leadership succession, community strength, and intergenerational equity. As professionals in accounting and finance, we play a critical role in shaping systems that endure—through transparency, long-term value creation, talent development, and inclusive leadership. Women are not simply contributing to these conversations; we are influencing how sustainable strategies are designed and implemented.

As we look toward the future, our responsibility is clear. Sustainable progress requires intentional mentorship and sponsorship, equitable access to leadership pathways, and a commitment to preparing the next generation to lead with integrity and vision. It challenges us to build workplaces and institutions that support both people and the planet—today and for years to come.

This theme is a reminder that sustainability is not a destination, but a commitment. And women—across generations—are leading the change.

👏👏 Amazing words, John! To me, the theme also reflects the collective strength of women and allies coming together to drive transformation. It's about sharing wisdom, uplifting one another, and ensuring that the future we build is sustainable for all people, communities, and workplaces. Happy Women's History Month!

I really appreciate this reflection, John. The way you've connected sustainability to the long-term strength of our profession-not just environmental impact-feels especially meaningful.

When I think about the women who paved the way in accounting and finance, I think about how much intentional effort it took to create opportunities that didn't previously exist, and about all of the challenges those women faced. Progress didn't just happen. It was built-through excellence, advocacy, mentorship, and a willingness to challenge the status quo.

That's what stands out to me about this year's theme. Sustainable progress requires intention. In our roles, we help shape capital decisions, governance practices, succession planning, and talent development. Those choices influence not only what endures, but who has the opportunity to lead.

As we look ahead, I find myself reflecting on a couple of questions:

    • Where are we being truly intentional about sponsorship and access to leadership?

    • How are we preparing the next generation not just to succeed within existing systems, but to strengthen and improve them?

Honoring the past matters. But building a sustainable future means creating environments where diverse leadership is expected, supported, and measured as part of long-term success.

I'd love to hear how others are bringing this theme to life within their teams and organizations.

    Thank you, John!

This theme really resonates with me. In my work leading Women's Initiatives at AICPA and CIMA, I see every day that sustainable progress is built on people-how we develop talent, mentor and sponsor others, and create pathways for future leaders. Women are driving much of this change, and it's strongest when men show up as allies-listening, advocating, and using their influence to support inclusive leadership. Sustainability isn't a moment; it's an ongoing commitment we make together.

Beautifully said, John. This really speaks to me-especially the reminder that sustainability is about more than systems; it's about people, opportunity, and the legacy we leave behind.

As I reflect on my own journey, I'm grateful for the women (i.e., Crystal and Mandy :) ) who opened doors I didn't even know existed at the time. Their resilience shaped my path, and it motivates me to be intentional about how I support others coming up behind me.

In my work, I see every day how women's leadership strengthens financial resilience, culture, and long‑term value. We're not just participating in the conversation-we're helping define what a sustainable future looks like.

Honored to continue that work and committed to paying it forward. 💜

This is a great thread! I was recently sharing with a team that when my career has thrived the most, it's always been when working with women owned or operated organizations (which luckily has been the majority of my career!)
