Subject: RE: Should the CIMA CFO Pathway Stay or Go? - A Discussion
Hi Jason,
I agree that hands-on work experience alone may not completely cover the management-level syllabus. However, I don't believe that's what CIMA truly intends.
Based on information from the registered tuition provider's website, here are the requirements for the program:

Subject: Should the CIMA CFO Pathway Stay or Go? - A Discussion
Hi Juraj,
Thank you for your comments. I would, however, like to clarify a few points.
The CFO Pathway and CIMA's standard exemption policy are distinct mechanisms. To my understanding, the CIMA website does not stipulate that an MBA or MSc in Finance or Accounting is a prerequisite for entry into the CFO Pathway - the stated requirement is ten years of relevant experience (see page posted below).
I have no objection in principle to granting advanced standing for prior education; this is common practice across all major accounting bodies. My concern, however, relates specifically to the experiential Pathways. Under the CFO Pathway, candidates deemed qualified by experience may be granted advanced standing up to the Strategic Level, which includes an exemption from the Management Case Study exam. This exam assesses management accounting and advanced financial reporting - core competencies of the CGMA designation - and I believe exempting candidates from it is a significant oversight.
I would also raise the question of experience quality. While all CFO experience is valuable, the scope and complexity of leading finance for a large listed company differs materially from that of a small SME. It is CIMA's responsibility to ensure a consistently high minimum standard regardless of the pathway taken.
Beyond the assessment concerns, I believe the CFO Pathway is having a tangible impact on the reputation of the CGMA designation. International mobility has historically been one of its most valued attributes. The lapse of the mutual recognition agreement with CPA Canada is a case in point - CGMA holders wishing to qualify as accountants in Canada must now pass two of the three Uniform CPA Exams, a requirement that did not previously exist.
Finally, I think it is important to acknowledge the perspective of CGMA holders who completed all levels of assessment - from Operational through to Strategic. Many of them feel, understandably, that the CFO Pathway does not represent an equivalent or equitable route to the same designation.
I look forward to continuing this discussion.
