I often return to Amy Poehler's words: 'Good for her, not for me.' To me, it's a reminder that every woman (and person) deserves the freedom to choose their own path - and the respect to walk it without judgment. Yet the reality is that women are still not always in charge of their own destiny. There are moments when I am still 'the only' woman on a call or in the room. And if you cannot see it, you cannot be it. Representation matters. Until the day women are no longer 'the only,' we need moments of recognition like Women's History Month and International Women's Day, and we need communities dedicated to strengthening women's leadership. These initiatives don't just celebrate progress - they help build the skills, visibility, and support that pave the way for the women who will come next.

This year's theme is "Give to Gain." What are some ways this has shown up in your life and career?

My first thought is through my volunteer work on the AICPA's Women's Initiatives Executive Committee (WIEC). I am giving my time but gaining by learning from others during every meeting, attending the AICPA's Women's Global Leadership Summit, and more.

Thank you for sharing this, Jessica!

For me, Give to Gain has shown up most clearly through mentorship, community‑building, and making space for others' voices. Throughout my career-and especially in my work leading Women's Initiatives at AICPA and CIMA-I've seen that when I invest time in connecting people, amplifying others' stories, and supporting women at different stages of their journey, I gain perspective, purpose, and stronger relationships in return. The more we share what we know and lift each other up, the more resilient and connected our profession becomes.

For me, the theme "Give to Gain" immediately brings to mind a guiding principle I often borrow from the National Association of Black Accountants: "Lifting as We Climb." It's a reminder that as we advance, grow, and find new opportunities, we have a responsibility to reach back, lift others up, and create space for them to thrive alongside us. When we do that we open doors, share access, and invest in someone's potential, and often realize that we gain far more than we give.

One of the most meaningful ways I try to live out this principle is through our Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to help every student who participates see themselves thriving in this profession, to ensure they not only feel that they belong here, but that they have a pathway toward whatever level of success they aspire to. We do it for them, of course, but the experience ends up being profoundly rewarding for us as well.

I hope I'm not too late for the party! Anyway, this year's theme hits home for me. The moments I've grown the most-personally and professionally-have come from giving:

✨ Giving mentorship has given me fresh perspective.
✨ Giving support has built a community I rely on.
✨ Giving space has sparked the best ideas in the room.

The more we lift others, the more we all rise.

Here's to giving generously-and gaining purpose, connection, and impact along the way.

Give to Gain for me is about mentorship and creating opportunity for others. I'm heavily involved in our Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter here in Buffalo, NY and being able to invest my time in the next generation is something I hold close to my heart. Being a BIG has been one of the greatest honors of my life so far. Knowing that I can be there for a child who just needs a friend, someone to talk to, or just someone to listen has been so special. I also bring this into my professional life and tell students and professionals that I am always here to listen and help them find opportunities to grow, amplify their voices, or connect with others has been so impactful and meaningful to me. It's about finding and giving support at the same time. I like to think that I learn just as much from these individuals as they are learning from me most days!  It's about taking the journey together and the power of collaboration and connection!
