As enterprise organizations continue to invest heavily in ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, and Dynamics, one persistent challenge remains unresolved - not at the transactional level, but at the group reporting and consolidation layer.
Despite robust systems, finance teams still rely on Excel-driven processes for multi-entity consolidation, intercompany eliminations, and management reporting. This results in fragmented data, delayed close cycles, limited auditability, and reduced decision confidence.
Having recently developed and tested an AI-enabled financial consolidation and finance intelligence platform, I have observed that the real gap is not in data availability, but in how effectively that data is structured, controlled, and transformed into decision-ready insight.
Most tools in the market are designed for SMBs or reporting efficiency. However, for large-scale enterprises, the need is fundamentally different - it is about:
- Managing complexity across multiple entities, currencies, and reporting structures
- Embedding governance, validation, and audit trails
- Enabling real-time consolidation with drill-down visibility
- Supporting leadership with insight, not just reports
This raises an important question for the profession:
Are we designing finance functions and systems that can safely scale from reporting to true intelligence?
From a practical perspective, the future architecture seems to require three distinct layers:
- ERP Layer – transaction processing and system of record
- Automation & Reporting Layer – consolidation, standardization, and reporting
- Finance Intelligence Layer – AI-driven insights, forecasting, and decision support
The key challenge is ensuring that the automation and reporting layer is built with strong governance, controls, and auditability, so that intelligence generated on top of it remains reliable and scalable.
From your experience:
- Where do you see the biggest bottleneck today - ERP, reporting, or decision layer?
- How are organizations managing governance and control as AI becomes more integrated into finance workflows?
Looking forward to hearing diverse perspectives from the community.
