  • 1.  Being the Only CPA in the Room

    Posted 03-25-2026 03:41 PM

Something I've been reflecting on lately-and I'm curious if others see it this way-is how different the CPA role can look depending on where you sit.

I'm in the nonprofit sector. I left public accounting for a controller role at an organization with over $1B in investments and approximately $90M in annual revenue. Even at that scale, I'm often the only CPA in the room.

My role sits at the intersection of finance, operations, compliance, and strategy-and not everyone fully understands what that looks like day to day. It also means I'm responsible for ensuring we're operating in compliance, following policies, and putting the right guardrails in place. At times, it can be an emotionally taxing role..

At the same time, I care deeply about supporting the profession and advocating for the impact CPAs have across all sectors. But so many of the conversations I hear-emails, webinars, meetings-are centered around public accounting.

That work is critical, but it's not the full picture of where CPAs are making an impact.

There are so many professionals working in nonprofit, corporate, government, and other roles who may not always see their experience reflected-or feel like they're part of the broader conversation.

If we want to build a meaningful community here, I think there's an opportunity to intentionally broaden that perspective.

I'd love to hear from others:

    • Do you see this gap as well?
    • Where are we missing representation across different CPA career paths?
    • What would make this space more valuable to you?

There's a lot of depth in this profession, and creating space for those different experiences will only make our community stronger.

I love this post, Kendall!  I also work in the Non Profit sector and have for the last 15+ years.  One of the reasons I joined the AICPA and got more involved is because of that lack of representation.  In non-public sectors we're very siloed in the work we do.  The only times I get to see other CPAs are at conferences, working with our auditors, or while intentionally building connections through LinkedIn and other local organizations. Some challenges that I've found along my journey is (1) it's hard to find other non-profit professionals (is there an org or community for us somewhere?) and (2) we lack a space to bounce ideas off of one another.  I've been blessed with great auditors who help me thing through things, but without them I'd be on an island all by myself.  This is making me realize that I should look into attending the AICPA's nonprofit conference and getting more involved there.

I'm interested to hear if you (or anyone else) has any idea for how can we change this?

This is very true. I believe that there is a GAP FOR STRICTLY TAX RESOLUTION AMONGST THE COMMUNITY. I AM VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT ADVOCATING FOR CLIENTS. WITHOUT BASHING IRS PROCESS AND PROCEDURES, I THINK THE AMOUNT OF TAXPAYERS RIGHTS BEING VIOLATED IS GROSSLY IGNORED, THE MISTAKES AND INCOMPETENT CS AGENTS INCREASE YEARLY.WITHOUT SOMEONE WHO TRULY CARES CLIENTS ARE AT RISK OF PAYING MORE THAN THEY TRULY OWE. I ALSO FEEL THAT GETTING AN APPROVAL FOR AN OIC IS ALMOST USELESS IF COMPLIANCE ISNT UPHELD. THEREFORE I AIM TO PROVIDE ADVISORY SERVICES MOVING FORWARD FROM OIC, THIS GUARANTEES MY TIME WASN'T WASTED. I HAVE A VERY HONEST UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP WITH ALL OF MY CLIENTS, THEY ARE CONFIDENT THAT AT THE END OF THE DAY, THEIR RIGHTS ARE BEING FOUGHT FOR. I WAS AN ENROLLED AGENT PRIOR RO TO BECOMING A CPA I COMPLETED MY ACCOUNTING DEGREE BECAUSE I FELT THE EAs HAVE MORE RESTRICTIONS THAN A CPA AND I WASNT TAKEN AS SERIOUS AS I CURRENTLY AM DUAL LICENSED. WHEN THE PUBLIC HEARS CPA THEY THINK OF SPREADSHEETS AND RECONCILING BOOKS, THEY ARE VERY WRONG. IF I CAN HELP CLIENTS GET OUT FROM UNDER THEIR IRS AND STATE TAX CONCERNS, ITS A GOOD DAY, IF I CAN WORK ONE ON ONE WITH MY CLIENTS TO CONTINUE COMPLIANCE ITS A LIFETIME ENGAGEMENT. I HAVE BEEN INTERESTED IN STARTING A NON PROFIT, BUT I WILL BE HONEST MY NON PROFIT KNOWLEDGE BASE IS DEFINITELY LIMITED.
