This month, we celebrate neurodiverse professionals and recognize the creativity, innovation, and perspectives they bring to our profession. Neurodiversity strengthens how teams think, collaborate, and solve problems—often in ways that lead to better decisions and more innovative outcomes.

As awareness grows, many organizations are taking a closer look at how their workplaces support different ways of thinking and working. From hiring and onboarding to communication norms and team culture, small, intentional changes can help remove hurdles and create space for neurodiverse professionals to do their best work.

How is your organization turning awareness into action—and what is one step you could take to better support neurodiverse professionals in your workplace?

We all benefit from neurodiverse teams. We all benefit when we have a group of people who have different ideas, different ways of looking at the world, and different ways to problem-solve. Think of all the times you might have been enlightened by a colleague who suggested a new framework or a new lens and you thought "Wow, I never thought of it like that!" This is what we gain we make space for many different types of thinkers. Things would be pretty boring if we all thought exactly the same way!

I'm looking forward to our upcoming webcast on neurodiversity in the profession where our panelists will discuss their experiences being neurodivergent in the accounting and finance profession. While April is neurodiversity and autism awareness an acceptance month, we champion neuroinclusion all year long!  Make sure to join us on May 13 for our discussion on neurodiversity in the profession and learn directly from neurodivergent professionals: AmplifiHER: More Than One Way to Think: Building Neuroinclusive Teams | Webcasts | AICPA & CIMA

Thanks for starting this important thread Mandy! I know you know this, but for those non-AICPA staff in the community...this week at the AICPA, we hosted another session in our Conversations That Matter series, an ongoing effort to raise awareness of the diverse lived experiences within our AICPA community, celebrate cultural differences, and strengthen everyday allyship and advocacy.

In recognition of Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness Month, colleagues who identify as neurodiverse led the conversation and generously shared their personal experiences and the workplace practices that help them thrive. We were also joined by subject matter experts who provided valuable insights and guidance on inclusive practices that foster environments where neurodiverse professionals feel supported, valued, and fully accepted.

These conversations remind us that inclusion is not a one-time initiative, but a continuous commitment, one that starts with understanding each other, learning, and intentionally creating space for every individual to feel comfortable bringing their whole self to work.

One step I'm committing to is normalizing the practice of asking all colleagues about the workstyles and environments that help them do their best work. By making this a standard part of how we work together, we can better support everyone, while also creating space for those who identify as neurodiverse to share their needs without feeling singled out or isolated.
